From Rural Roots to Global Impact: Gratitude, Community, and the Soul of Programming Knowledge
It has been a month of profound reflection—one of the 663 months that have shaped a life. This is not a lengthy essay, but a heartfelt acknowledgment of two pivotal truths. First, I am deeply grateful that the reordering of the Guaranteed Minimum Income (GMI) rural study counties placed Mercer County, West Virginia—my father’s home—first in October 2025. A Final Visit and a Lasting Legacy
Both my father and I knew this moment was coming. Yet there is no sense of loss, because nothing ever truly ends. Every memory of our time together—especially that last October trip—remains vivid and eternal. Nothing was lost; everything was gained. We conquered the game of capitalism, then returned to improve it for all. And I am far from finished with my third startup.
My father’s life and values are intertwined with the broader story of opportunity. The Rural Guaranteed Minimum Income Initiative (RGMII) is a $50 million plan that funds rural studies to expand opportunity and strengthen democracy. It was his county that went first, and that timing allowed me one final, precious goodbye.
The Power of Community: Gratitude to Stack Overflow
Secondly, I want to thank every single person who has ever contributed to Stack Overflow—in any way. And no, this isn’t about Starship this time!
Did you know that large language models (LLMs) essentially could not code without access to the exceptionally high-quality creative commons programming Q&A dataset that we all built together on Stack Overflow? Don’t take my word for it—ask the LLMs themselves. They will tell you. Go ahead, press them on it. I strongly recommend using pro mode when you do, because in my experience, those are the only decent LLM modes. It is remarkable what you can achieve with global brain statistics and a carefully curated dataset created by we, the people!
The Delicate Balance Between AI and Human Communities
If the LLMs end up hollowing out the very communities that produce all their training data, they will deeply regret it. I offer these LLM and generative AI companies the same advice I gave Joel Spolsky when I left Stack Overflow to start Discourse: do not—for any reason, under any circumstances—kill the goose that lays the golden eggs. That golden goose is the human community around your product that does all the real work.
It is simple: treat the community with the respect they deserve—the respect we all deserve. Thank you for being a friend, because there is no way I could have done any of this without you.
